Specifications for pole placement and lighting
The football field lighting poles can vary in size and location, as shown in the diagram to the right. Pole arrangements typically consist of four poles, while six and eight pole arrangements are also popular. Poles may be positioned in the spaces between bleachers or stands when working with huge stadiums.

Depending on the level of competition, lighting requirements for football ground lights do change. At various levels of play, the IES, or Illuminating Engineering Society, suggests the following footcandle minimums:

20fc, recreational (limited or no observers)

High School (30fc) (up to 2,000 spectators

High School: 50fc (5,000 spectators or more)

100-150 to 150fc

As you can see, the quantity of spectators the field is designed to hold has a significant impact on the amount of light required to illuminate it. College football is often a big game that is frequently televised, therefore there are frequently more than tens of thousands of fans. The suggested footcandles are significantly increased in a large stadium with a sizable audience.

The maximum and minimum lighting ratios for a football pitch also change with the level of play. A max/min ratio indicates how equal the illumination in a particular location is. The calculation is done by dividing the highest number of footcandles by the lowest number of footcandles in the same region. It is commonly accepted that even illumination, devoid of hot spots or gloomy areas on the lighted surface, has a max/min ratio of less than 3.0. An acceptable max/min ratio for high school and below is 2.5 or below. A ratio of 2.0 or below is required for college and higher education.
